The National Association of Small and Medium Enterprises (Nasme) has expressed the need to train small and medium enterprises (SME) in international trade.

In an interview last week, Nasme executive director William Mwale said the training will help SMEs to derive much benefit from trade opportunities at Tete in Mozambique.

Nasme members have found a lucrative market for kamba puffs, orange squash and other products in Tete.

This year, the first group of SMEs left for Mozambique on January 21.

“There are a lot of business opportunities for SMEs in Tete. Malawian SMEs need training to ensure that they sell quality products on the international markets,” said Mwale.

He said the trade tours such as that of Tete and another one that is yet to be organised to Mumbai in India will help local SMEs to become exporters.

In an earlier interview, Malawi Investment and Trade Centre (Mitc) project and market research officer Maurice Gondwe advised Nasme members to ensure that they fulfil orders they will take in Mozambique.

“Tete is a booming province and there are a lot of market opportunities Malawi needs to take advantage of in all sectors.

“Due to its proximity, Malawi needs to develop strategies it can use to tap from such opportunities,” said Gondwe.
